Public Schools, An A+ System

The County is served by an excellent school system--the Roane County School System. The school system has achieved the Governor's A+ Award for Community Commitment to Excellence in Education. The A+ award, which was established by the State of Tennessee, recognizes our entire community, as well as our schools, for placing high emphasis on quality education.

To earn the A+ award, the Roane County school system has programs in the following ten areas:

Advanced Education

Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman

The Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman is one of 26 such centers in the State. The Center is governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents and is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. Full-time programs are approved for veterans' training by the State Office for Veterans' Education.

The primary purpose of the Center is to provide occupational and technical training for area residents. Instruction is designed to prepare the student for employment or to enable an employed person to advance by providing the needed skills and technical information. Any person who is 18 or older and has a job objective may apply for admission to the Center. Two types of training are offered:


Preparatory Training...Instruction in a specific occupational area designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to get a job. Supplemental Training...Evening classes for employed workers designed to help them advance in their job.

The campus, which is less than an hours drive from Roane County, is located in Cookeville, a city of 28,000 located on the eastern Highland Rim of Tennessee.
